It was another successful season for the bluebirds nesting at the Mines of Spain. This year Tom Davis and Galen Mathis joined me in monitoring 30 bird houses on a weekly basis. The results were very comparable to last year, when we had 25 houses.

We do not keep track of Northern House Wrens, which also actively use the boxes. Black-capped Chickadees have not nested since 2021, when we had 5 fledglings.

Our volunteers monitoring bird houses at Mines of Spain counted 99 Eastern Bluebird eggs, 72 nestlings, and 52 fledglings this year!

On Sunday, April 21, 2024, 13 members of the Dubuque Audubon Society and volunteers from the public worked for over two hours to remove 28 bags of garbage from the 16th Street Retention Basin.

With permission from the city of Dubuque, the Dubuque Audubon Society has created and installed educational signage at Technology Park to share information on birds that nest in those fields.
